Want to get away from the crowds at Catawba Falls and Upper Catawba Falls? Take a side hike to Davids Falls and I promise you’ll have it all to yourself. It doesn’t come close to competing with those waterfalls in grandeur, but it’s a fun little waterfall.

I didn’t give it high marks in the third edition of North Carolina Waterfalls, published in 2016. I barely gave it any marks at all. Not sure why, but when I returned two days shy of ten years later, I was pleasantly surprised at how delightful it was.

Back in 2015 there was a National Forest marker on a tree at the base of the falls and it appeared that most of the waterfall was on private property. In 2025, there’s a marker on a tree at the top of the falls and none at the base. Checking the McDowell County GIS site, it looks like the entire waterfall is in Pisgah National Forest.
