US 1 crosses Deep River a few miles north of Sanford.

Lockville Dam lies about 0.3 mile upstream from the US 1 crossing of Deep River. You can see it from the bridge, but it’s not a good view and it’s not safe walking out on the bridge to see it. The property on both sides of the river is private.

The dam is a few miles north of Sanford on US 1.

Get Your Bearings

The only safe way to see the dam without trespassing is the float Deep River or walk out on the US 1 bridge. I do a lot of things that others think are dangerous, but walking out on this bridge is not one of them. Even if the bridge view was good (it’s not) I wouldn’t do it. If you need to cross the dam off some list you’re working on, I recommend riding shotgun in a slow-moving car traveling west. But not too slow. The road here is like an interstate.

Special Considerations

The rapid downstream from the dam and/or the one flooded by it was called Jones Falls and/or Pullens Falls. It’s kind of confusing. See the

Efforts are underway to remove Lockville Dam and restore the natural flow of the river.
