You’ll pass by Lower Catawba Falls on your hike to Catawba Falls. There’s an open view of it right from the trail. Several years ago, the waterfall had a tropical feel to it, with lush moss all over the rocks and green vegetation on the banks, but Tropical Storm Helene, which roared through in 2024, removed any idea of the tropics at this waterfall. It’s still worth a look, though.

There used to be a path leading down to the base of the falls, but it’s no longer there. I don’t think it’s worth climbing down the bank. The view from the trail is perfectly good, although it’s not great for photos.

At the top of the falls are the remains of Old Fort Dam, built in the 1920s to supply electricity to Old Fort. More info about it is on the separate page for the dam.
